SF Otago

SF Otago

Supporting Families in Mental Illness is a registered incorporate charitable organisation that has been operating for nearly 30 years, providing support, information, advocacy and education on behalf of people with mental illness, their families/whanau and caregivers.  Based in Dunedin, services extend throughout much of the Otago region.

SF provides a range of effective and efficient programmes to cultivate and promote a family based organisation. By promoting the rights and needs of people with mental illness and their families/whanau, opportunities are provided for mutual support, sharing experiences and gaining strength to cope with daily living. SF Otago fieldworkers provide information about mental illness, treatment options accommodation and relevant legislation. Advocacy is one of the key elements vital to the mission of SF Otago which includes supporting families during appointments and insuring the family perspective in service development. SF Otago also provides an environment for those individuals recovering from a major mental illness with Tapestry Clubhouse.

The SF Otago Tapestry Clubhouse model is the only one in New Zealand and, as such, is leading the way in many aspects of assisting people within our community.  The Clubhouse operates along a “work-ordered day” principle and amongst the important goals is to assist members in re-entering the workforce and building the much needed self esteem that is associated with having gainful employment.  SF Otago works to promote acceptance of and reduce discrimination against people with mental illness. We welcome the opportunity to provide guest speakers or information to any group or organisation.

Recently we launched a brand new web site www.supportingfamiliesotago.org.nz.  We are linking with the numerous organisations and agencies to provide information and support to those experiencing mental illness and their families/whanau. Our newsletter and other documents are available for download and the website provides up to date information on the services and programmes available though SF Otago.
