The Key Performance Indicator Framework

In 2006 the Ministry of Health followed the National Mental Health Information Strategy with an Implementation Plan. Priority seven of the Implementation Plan: Use of Information as a Quality Improvement Tool proposed 'the development of key performance indicators using current data and then using those indicators as par to a benchmarking activity whereby providers can learn from each other about the practices and processes that best contribute to improved outcomes for consumers.'

The work to provide a quality improvement tool for mental health services began in 2006 and the result has been  an agreed set of domains . Agencies that are providing services can use this information to measures or compare where they are in relation to others. The project, funded by the Ministry of Health, is designed to provide opportunities for DHBs and NGOs to benchmark their services and enhance collaboration across the sector.
